Under 18 Green through to the quarter-final

February 5, 2019

The weekend’s poor weather meant that most matches were cancelled for the many teams of community grassroots football club Omonia Youth FC, sponsored by PIA Financial Group and Philip Ross Solicitors. However, two matches did go ahead for the club’s two oldest teams and both exhibited a good quality of football and two good results.

Kyri Georgiou’s Under 18 Green played in freezing conditions for a place in the quarter final of the Challenge Cup. The team dominated the first half but could not convert the many chances they created into goals; squandering chance after chance.

The second half was more even and after exchanging and sharing four goals, the full time score was 2-2 which meant the game went into extra-time. A goalless period of extra-time saw the game go to penalties with Nicholas Minas showing his prowess in goal as he saved two of the three penalties he faced with the Under 18 Green winning the penalty shoot-out 3-0.

Goals in normal time were scored by Charlie Constanti and Yianni Polycarpou and Nicholas Minas was named Man of the Match. A great result for the team who now take their place in the last eight.

Chris Gregoriou’s under 18 White had a league match and drew 3-3. While only taking a point, there were plenty of positives. With only 11 players to choose from, there were players having to play in unfamiliar position and it was no surprise that the under 18 White endured a disjointed first half display and saw them go into the half time break 2-0 down. With reinforcements having arrived, a re-shuffle of the team and a tactical change saw the under 18 White recover the deficit by scoring two excellent goals. They then hit the post, the bar and several saves from the opposition prevented them winning the game. Both teams scored another goal each to end the game 3-3.

Goal scorers were Raheem Watt (2) and Dev Genc with Josh Barry named Man of the Match who made an excellent and long awaited debut.
