Two County Cup semi-finalists for Omonia Youth FC

January 17, 2019

Community grassroots club Omonia Youth FC, sponsored by PIA Financial Group and Philip Ross Solicitors, is celebrating two teams qualifying for the semi-final of the prestigious County Cup.

Nick Lingis and Mario Christoforou’s Under 14 Green will take their place in the Middlesex Cup semi-final after a brilliant performance at home winning 4-1. Some great goals underlined a disciplined performance. Goals were scored by

Joe K (2), Georgios C and Erin M. Raul A was named Man of the Match.

Panos Papa-Michael, Elias Constanti and Andy Michael’s Under 15 Gold also made the last four of the County Cup in what was a fantastic match.

The Under 15 Gold had the odds stacked against them. Due to long-term injuries, a very thin squad made the trip. In difficult playing conditions due to the high winds and a pitch already cut up from the previous game meant it was difficult for the under 15 Gold to play their usual fluid passing football and when they did it was difficult to maintain. The team’s only substitute, who is a keeper, had to come on within 10 minutes due to an injury to one of the centre-halfs.

The Under 15 Gold then went a goal down mid-way through the half and then with about 10 minutes of the half to go the goalkeeper took a knock and also had to come off. The Under 15 Gold were now down to 10 men. Half-time therefore couldn’t come soon enough for with the coaching team eager to re-organise and change the team’s approach to the match.

Early in the second half the under 15 Gold scored an equaliser and all of a sudden the 10 men were dominating possession and creating chances. A superb second goal soon followed and then a third goal which was a penalty. As the game went on it was clear that tired legs were affecting the team and the opposition pulled a goal back and really started to put the pressure on. Inevitably with a few minutes to go they scored again to make 3-3. However that was not the end of the scoring. Somehow the spirit and determination of the Under 15 boys lifted again and with almost the last play of the game they scored a winning goal via a superb through ball which was latched on to and finished expertly for a stunning 4-3 win. Goals were scored by Youseff Habibi (3) and Andy Polycarpou

Coach Elia was elated and said: “There were so many positives today from everyone involved, and all of the boys made a telling impact on the game – for that they should all be nominated for Man of the Match.”

In other matches Mario Yiasemi’s Under 12 Gold pulled off an absolutely brilliant performance to win 4-2. Logan (2), Dhiren and Demos scored the goals with Logan named Man of the Match.

Savva Zavros and David Poncia’s Under 13 Gold saw their team play some excellent football in an entertaining 3-3. Max, Leo and Mustafa scored the goals with Mustafa Atif named Man of the Match.

Chris and Jimmy Mousicos’ Under 14 Gold were outstanding as they won 3-0 against their high flying opponents. Aaron Lewis, Mohamed Conteh and Kayden Trey Virgo with the goals with Mohammed and Aaron named Man of the Match.

Michael Pieri’s Under 14 White kept their promotion hopes alive with a straightforward 6-1 win at home. Having gone into the half time break just 1-0 up, the team in the second half showed their quality with some excellent goals after conceding an early equalising goal. Alfonso Rosselli (3),, Noel Allen, Godwin Obeng and Malekai Thomas score the goals with Malekai and Alfonso named Man of the Match.

Nick Georgiou’s Under 16 White lost their league game 2-1 in match where the team will learn plenty from. Apostolos Tziatzios got their only goal with Alex Pike named Man of the Match.

George Pantelides’ Under 14 Girls faced a tough away game and a swirling wind didn’t help their play. The girls created a couple of very good chances after interplay between Giorgia and Chelsea, but unfortunately couldn’t score. One mistake and one worldy goal meant they were chasing the game and the score at half time was 2-0. Against the wind second half made it was difficult for the girls to get any distance up the pitch. Some tough tackling from Player of the match Nicole and some inspired goalkeeping from Emilia kept the score down to a respectable 3-0 defeat. Considering the girls conceded five against the same team earlier in the season, progress is being shown by the team every week.
