Positive performances from Omonia Youth FC teams

September 16, 2020

The second match day of the new season brought many positive performances for community grassroots club Omonia Youth FC who are sponsored by Spector, Constant & Williams, Vas Barbers and V Jewellers

Alex Christofi and Serkan Nihat’s Under 14 White were dominant as they ran out 12-1 winners in a relatively straight forward and one-sided match. There were seven different goal scorers: Kaya (3), Yullian (2), Anthony P (2), Ioannis (2) Emirhan, Theo and Dimari.

Mike Koumi and Adam Broomfeld’s Under 13 White played their first league of the season in a match that saw the team start very slowly. A lack of closing down and poor defending saw them go 2-0 down early in game. The boys woke up and pulled one back, but then conceded again to go 3-1 down. The boys halved the deficit before the half time and then equalised early on second half. Good football saw the Under 13 White create many chances but they couldn’t close out win and drew 3-3. Nick scored two goals, Chris got the other with Jesiah named Man of the Match for his excellent fullback play.

Zeno Vryonides and Vas Simou’s Under 13 Green had another tough game and playing the first half uphill on a sloping pitch didn’t help either. However, even though they were missing some players the squad showed great energy and great effort which led to some lovely passing combinations. They conceded three unlucky goals in the first 20 minutes but they managed to fight back and score two goals themselves and a narrow 3-2 defeat notwithstanding, the coaches were proud of their team for their battling display. There were plenty of positives to take from the game. Angelo and Christopher V were the scorers.

Tas Georgiou’s Under U14 Green played without their regular goalkeeper and with Charlie stepping in his Man of the Match performance earned his team a credible 303 draw. Alex scored twice with Theo getting the other goal.

Mario Yiasemi’s Under 14 Gold won 8-5 in their first game of the season. The boys made a great start to the game were three up but conceded twice towards the end of the half. The second half saw the Under 14 Gold miss a few chances and their opposition equalised. This galvanised the Under 14 Gold and they again went ahead to eventually run out 8-5 winners and take all three points.

Goals were scored by Man of the Match Arda (4), Jovan (2) and Dhiren (2)

Nick Georgiou’s Under 18 Gold only had 8 fit and available players and were brilliant as they only lost 3-0. The team are rebuilding again this season so plenty of work is needed all around but there were encouraging signs. Man of the Match was Michael Vassiliou

Michael Pieri’s Under 16 White suffered a 2-1 defeat after conceding a late goal. The boys were so much better than last week and deserved at least a draw. Player registration complications meant they only had two subs so missing six players was a factor. Nevertheless, having taken the lead and created chances, defeat was difficult to take. Erdal scored his second goal in two games with Kyle L named Man of the Match.

Finally, Myri Demetriou and Kyri Eleftheriou’s Under 12 White put on another sensational performance and their third game in a week to run out 4-2 winners. Both coaches were rightly proud of their team as they showed heart and bravery to battle back from 1-0 down, and then 2-1 down. Playing sensible, passing football, looking for the spaces in behind the opposition on what was a very big pitch paid dividends as they restricted the opposition to two meaningful chances that they scored from. Excellent performances from every single player. Goals were scored by Andrew Demetriou (2), Andre Eleftheriou, and Nicholas Polycarpou with Andre named Man of the Match for a strong, disciplined performance at centre back, and also scoring the crucial third goal with a stunning free kick.

The club’s new men’s team, sponsored by Crown Mobile Tyres, Athletic Development Club, The Master Locksmith, CJAZ Consulting and RAMEK asset management, didn’t have a match this week and are back in action on Sunday.
