Plenty of good performances from Omonia Youth FC teams

September 19, 2018

Community football club Omonia Youth FC, sponsored by PIA Financial Group and Philip Ross Solicitors enjoyed plenty of great results last Sunday with the grassroots youth football in full swing. The Radiomarathon Centre in Enfield was a fortress for the home teams as five teams were unbeaten with four teams winning their matches.

Michael Pieri’s Under 14 White were first with an early kick off playing in a League Cup Preliminary Round. The team put on a dominant display against a team playing a division above. Having progressed to the next round with a 3-0 win, what was as pleasing as the three goals scored was keeping a clean sheet. Coach Michael said the team were “…brilliantly disciplined positionally, with some very pleasing interplay. Well done to the team, they deserved their win today.” Goals were scored by Itiel Omadjela on his debut and two more from Noel Allen. Man of the Match was Malekai Thomas.

Omi Omirou and Stel Loizou’s Under 13 Green continued their perfect start to the season with a convincing 5-0 win. After a slow start to the first half in which they were lucky to go 1-0 up, the team came out a different team in the second half. The boys showed great character and credit to all of them for great team performance as they went on to score four more goals. Last season’s club top goalscorer got a hat-trick and the Man of the Match award with Will Gutierrez getting the other two.

Still at the Radiomarathon Centre, Panos Papa-Michael and Elias Constanti’s U16 Gold were also convincing winners winning 4-0 and in truth should’ve scored more. It was a controlled performance that should’ve yielded more goals. Goals were scored by Andy Polycarpou (2), George Constanti and Michael Papa-Michael. Man of the Match was Zack.

The other two games at the Radiomarathon Centre were draws. Savvas Zavros and David Poncia’s Under 13 Gold played out a 0-0 draw in an excellent display of football which saw them dominate the game throughout but unfortunately couldn’t convert the several chances they created. Man of the Match was Louis Brown.

Finally, Nick Georgiou and Dino’s Under 16 White drew 1-1 after taking the lead. Goal scorer was Peter Michael with Lyon Theocharous named Man of the Match.

Elsewhere Chris and Jimmy Mousico’s Under 14 Gold won 1-0 away. Kayden Trey Virgo with the game’s only goal. Rayen Haboubi was Man of the Match.

Nicl Lingis and Mario Christoforou’s Under 14 Green put up a great performance against last year’s league runners-up and having gone 1-0 up couldn’t hold on and conceded an unlucky penalty. The Under 14 Green’s had chances to win it and hit the bar late on. Nick said after the match: “I’m a happy coach as the boys are playing really well and showing great team spirit.” Joe Katsianounis scored their goal and was named Man of the Match.

The last of the Under 14 teams to play made it an unbeaten Sunday for the age group as Harry Theodorou and George Sammoutis’ Under 14 Silver put on the performance of the day by winning 7-0. The boys played with great fluidity, consistently pressing as a unit and leaving the opposition with next to no time on the ball. Goals were scored by Gabriel Nyarko-Duodo (2), Viktor Borisov (2), Mehmet Buyuk (2) and Kyri Kyriacou. Gabriel, on his debut, was named Man of the Match.

Demi Shiamishis and Barrington’s Under 15 Green won 3-2. It was an excellent win and performance after going 1-0 down. The team battled superbly and should have had more than the three goals they scored. Julian grabbed a hat-trick and the Man of the Match award.

In the County Cup, Alex Christofi and Serkan Nihat’s Under 12 White went through to the next round thanks to a 3-1 win. Goals from Harry Photiou (2) and Christopher Pike with Harry named Man of the Match.

Michael Petrou and Kyri Haili’s Under 15 White were short of a player and it unbalanced the team. Injuries them forced them to play with 10 men for part of the second half and it was no surprise that they went on to lose 4-1. Valentino S got the goal with Tyler P named Man of the Match.

Mario Demetriou, Johnny Othona and Elvis Leon’s Under 12 Green suffered a 7-3 loss. Nat scored a hat-trick and was named Man of the Match.

Chris Gregoriou’s under 18 White drew 3-3 in a match they could’ve won. A quick start saw them take an early lead from a corner headed in by Chris Yiannitsarou, followed by a dazzling run from Michel Patsias who slotted past the keeper to make it 2-0. The opposition pull a goal back but a rasping drive from Nicholas Gregoriou then made it 3-1. They then conceded two goals through individual and collective errors to make the score 3-3 but the team forced more openings and chances all with no joy. Chris Yiannitsarou was named Man of the Match.

Mario Yiasemi’s Under 12 Gold were a player down for the whole game and lsot 4-0. However the boys were brilliant and created lots of chances even with 8 boys. Man of the Match was Logan.

Kyri Gerogiou’s Under 18 Green lost 4-1 away after taking the lead early in the second half but conceded three set pieces in 10 minutes as well as a breakaway goal. Having dominated most of the game and missing plenty of good goal scoring opportunities, it was a lesson in pushing through your advantage when you have it. Jamal was the scorer and named Man of the Match.
