Omonia Youth FC: New Year, New Goals, and a Call to Action (5th Jan)

January 7, 2025

We hope everyone had a joyful holiday period and wish you all a very Happy New Year! This weekend saw limited action, with only two matches played as many grassroots games were cancelled due to cold weather and icy pitches. Despite this, Omonia Youth FC continues to make an impact both on and off the pitch.

The club is proud to support the Leukaemia Cancer Society and the German Bone Marrow Donor Centre (DKMS) in a vital drive for stem cell donations. This event will take place at our main training ground, Southgate Hockey Club, on Friday, 10th January, from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm. We encourage everyone eligible to come forward and help make a difference. More info about the drive at the end of this article.

U12 White Girls: Deserved Victory in Hackney
The U12 White Girls travelled to Hackney to face a physical and determined opponent. Despite dominating possession in the first half, the team struggled to create clear-cut chances against resolute defending. Strong defensive work ensured Omonia’s goalkeeper remained largely untested.
In the second half, the girls continued to dominate play, even against the wind. Persistence paid off in the 58th minute when Melisa’s fine finish broke the deadlock. The team managed the remaining minutes expertly to secure a hard-fought and well-deserved win.

U11 White: Hard Work Overshadowed by Poor Officiating
The U11 White team played a fantastic game of football against a strong opponent, with both teams showcasing skill and determination. The match was played in excellent spirit, with plenty of good football on display.

Omonia worked hard, moved the ball well, and created numerous chances. However, the game was overshadowed by disappointing refereeing, which left the players and coaches disheartened. Despite this, the team’s effort and sportsmanship shone through, reflecting the club’s values.

As we look forward to the second half of the season, Omonia Youth FC continues to build a sense of community both on and off the pitch. We remind everyone of the upcoming stem cell donor drive in aid of Natassa, a 19-year-old of Cypriot heritage in need of a lifesaving donor.

Eligibility for donors includes being aged 17–55 and in good general health. For more information, please contact the Leukaemia Cancer Society on 0203 686 5303 or 07872 633 506. Together, we can make a difference and save lives.
