County Cup success for Omonia Youth FC teams

January 13, 2020

Community football club Omonia Youth FC, sponsored by PIA Financial Group and Philip Ross Solicitors, had many of their teams in County Cup action last week with some stunning results but also some near misses. Two teams made it to the next round of the prestigious Middlesex County Cup.

Adam Demetri and Evagoras Mandrides’ Under 14 Silver saved their best performance of the season for last week’s quarter-final tie. In a one-sided match, the Under 14 Silver produced some amazing football today with the boys gelling beautifully together. There was game plan in place and the boys executed it to perfection. Coach Adam said: “…our first goal come from Jardel who scored with his first touch coming off the bench. This was followed by a second five minutes later, a great strike from Johnny outside the box to take us into half time 2-0 up. Knowing the opposition were going to come at us we played a very controlled game from the back to hit them on the counter attack which the boys executed it perfectly. Twice in the second half we scored on the counter. The boys were able to play keep-ball which frustrated the opponents in what was a 10 out 10 performance.”

The win takes the Under 14 Silver into the last four of the competition. Goals were scored by Jardel, Johnny and a brace from Brodie. The whole team were rightly named Man of the Match.

Chris and Jimmy Mousicos’ Under 15 Gold also got through to the next round of the Middlesex Cup in a hard fought match and coming through 3-2. Louis Georgiou (2) and Robin Kwon got the goals with Immanuel and Lewie named Man of the Match. The win takes the Under 15 Gold into the quarter-finals.

Unfortunately last season’s runners-up, Nick Lingis and Mario Christoforou’s Under 15 Green went out on penalties. Chris Gregoriou’s Under 18 White also went out after controlling much of the match. Having gone 1-0 up and very comfortable two mistakes were punished and the Under 18 White went into half time 2-1 down. The Under 18 White created chances galore in the second half and a red card to the opposition should have made it easier for us but they couldn’t break their opposition down and they held on for the win. Anthony Akinyemi got the goal with Liam Togher named Man of the Match for a battling display.

In League action Mario Demetriou, Johnny Othona and Elvis Leon’s Under 13 Green lost 3-2 but the match was considered a interesting learning curve for the team.

Mike Koumi and Adam Broomfeld’s Under 12 White put in a disappointing performance which wasn’t helped by dubious officiating. Despite scoring first, the Under 12 Whites sat back and allowed the opposition into the game. Despite the team creating a number of chances they could not score and were defeated 3-1 Chris got the only goal with Thomas named Man of the Match.

Robert Protei and George Constantinou’s Under 12 Gold drew 3-3 in a match where the team played very well but it just couldn’t get the winning goal despite seeing many efforts cleared off the line and hitting the woodwork seven times! Pablo was named Man of the Match who scored hat-trick.

Mario Yiasemi’s Under 13 Gold won 6-3 playing on a very difficult playing surface which made it impossible to play their normal flowing football. Once the team adapted to the conditions they scored the goals to win the game and in truth were always in control. Arda scored a hat-trick with Muzzammil (2) and Logan getting the other goals. Jackson was named Man of the Match.

Savva Zavros and David Poncia’s Under 14 Gold out in another respectable performance which them maintain possession for the majority of the game. Excellent communication throughout and three good goals gave them a 3-2 win. Ky scored a brace with Kaian getting the other goal.

Kyri Georgiou’s Under 18 Green won 4-0 against good opposition. In a very tight first half it was both goalkeepers who excelled, making fantastic saves to keep it to 0-0 at the break. In the second half though the Under 18 Green’s class and power shone through to score four unanswered goals to go top of the table. Man of the Match Solos Souris scored twice, as did Yiannis Polycarpou.

Zeno Vryonides Under 12 Green, went down 4-1 but he was full of praise for his two goalkeepers who showed good decision making and were both were quick to play the ball out and keep the game flowing.

Finally Nick Georgiou and Dino Savva’s Under 18 Gold won 2-1 away. The team were not at their best but an effective half time team talk saw the team take on board what was said to them and they were the better team in the second half. Difficult pitch conditions did not suit their style of football but the determination and effort was there. An own goal and a strike from Theo Stavrou was enough for all three points. Anthony Gregori was named Man of the Match.
